Wyrd Science Magazine - Issue 3 "The Horror Issue"
Läs mer om tidningen på Kickstarterkampanjen.
Wyrd Science is a new, quarterly magazine celebrating roleplaying games, war-games and board games that sets out to give space wizards, gelatinous cubes and tentacled gods the respect they deserve. We love games, we love playing them, designing them and talking about them. We love the inherent ridiculousness of so many of the games we play and how, whether watching a live stream or playing at home, they're the perfect distraction when the world feels like it's falling apart.
SO WHAT'S IN ISSUE 3?
Since the humans first gathered around their fires to tell tall tales, horror has been used to both entertain and educate, so it's no surprise that it has been an integral part of our games too. So join us as we explore the dark, shadowy corners of tabletop gaming in our horror game special...
- First up acclaimed roleplaying game historian Shannon Appelcline, author of the acclaimed Designers & Dragons series, takes us on a tour of the near 50 year history of horror RPGs from the sword & sorcery books that inspired D&D, through to the dark days of the satanic panic, the vampire obsessed 1990s and onto today.
- We look at cosmic horror author H.P. Lovecraft's posthumous journey from relative obscurity to inspiring hundreds of books, games and even soft toys. Moreover we look at how the Cthulhu mythos continues to inspire game designers today, even as they deal with the uncomfortable legacy of Lovecraft's real world beliefs.
- Staying with the world of mind breaking horror, Stuart Martyn looks at that staple of horror RPGs over the years -the sanity mechanic- and examines how attitudes to mental health in tabletop games have evolved over the years.
- We head to the Mythic North and explore Nordic folk horror RPG Vaesen in the company of the game's lead writer Nils Hintze and catch up with Graeme Davis, veteran writer behind games such as Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play and author of the Vaesen's new Mythic Britain & Ireland supplement.
- We launch ourselves into space in search of horror amongst the stars, look at some of our favourite roleplaying games and speak to their designers about how they go about adding chills to the inky void of space.
- Indie game savants Adam Vass and Will Jobst sit down with Samantha Nelson and talk us through Campfire, their new game of spooky storytelling and the horror anthologies that inspired it.
- We welcome one of our favourite writers on tabletop games, Dan Thurot (Spacebiff.com), to the magazine as he explores how, and indeed if, board games can truly deliver a fearful experience.
- Jack Shear braves the haunted library to look back at the gothic literature that helped shape the mist shrouded domain of dread that is Dungeons & Dragons' iconic horror setting Ravenloft.
- Luke Frostick meets up with the team from British design studio Rowan, Rook & Decard to learn what terrors inspired their award winning RPG Spire and how they've built a company that's anything but a horror show.
- We head back to South America and talk to Brazillian game and graphic designer Guilherme Gontijo about his love of giallo horror films and his stunning looking new game Blurred Lines.
- ... and Walton Wood speaks to Paolo Greco about The Book of Gaub, a new tome of wicked wizardry and maleficent magic that aims to put the sinister back into sorcery.
