Bretwalda is a game for 1-4 players that plays in around 2 hours. Each player takes charge of one of the four major kingdoms of England: Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex and East Anglia. Their goal: to claim the crown of Bretwalda, the Britain-ruler.

To become Bretwalda, players must overcome marauding Vikings, take control of key areas on the board, complete Chronicles (secret objectives), and build Abbeys to help spread Christianity across the land.

The game is set in a turbulent period of England’s Early Medieval history. Viking raiders are conquering swathes of land in the East. Paganism is being replaced by Christianity. And the kingdoms of England are in a constant game of diplomacy, alliance building and conflict to claim the crown of Bretwalda.

Each of the four player kingdoms is asymmetric, with three unique Rulers, and a special Kingdom ability. Play is fast-paced. Each season players may conduct just two of four possible actions: collection, development, Fyrd (mobilization) and movement. Before any player actions, a new season’s event will be drawn, and the armies of Vikings or independent Kingdoms may arrive or be paid by players to attack rivals.

The game will last a maximum of 12 seasons, meaning that each decision is critical. Insufficient taxation means no funds to develop the kingdom or bribe nearby Vikings. A poor harvest and armies will desert. Bartering and alliance-building with opponents may solve the situation in the short-term, but, with conquest often critical to victory, will it be long before a betrayal?
